International Maritime Law sets up the IGF Code (International Gas Fuels Code) to regulate all vessels that utilize low flashpoint fuels. The AIGF Training Course (Advanced Instruction for Vessels Using Fuels Regulated by the IGF Code) is a short term, industry recognised training course for crew members who work on ships utilizing low flashpoint or alternative fuels (e.g., LNG) and will be endorsed by DG Shipping as required for seafarers on newer types of vessels using low flashpoint fuels. The AIGF training course is a 5 day course designed to prepare Masters, Deck Officers, Engineering Officers and Crew members to safely carry out bunkering, storing, handling and operating of low flashpoint/alternative fuels, and the associated safety and emergency systems relating to their use.
The advanced AIGF training course will include the following material:
1) Properties of low flashpoint/alternative fuel,
2) Low flashpoint/alternative fuel systems on board the vessel,
3) Bunkering procedures for low flashpoint/alternative fuel,
4) Emergency response for igniting fuel spills,
5) Emergency response for detecting gas,
6) Risk based safe work practices.
Candidates will typically have to complete the 4 basic STCW safety courses, acquire a Basic IGF Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) before being allowed to take the AIGF Training course and must pass the exit exam to attain their AIGF Certificate.

What is Eligibility for an AIGF Course?

A potential candidate for the AIGF (Advanced Training for Ships Using Fuels - IGF Code (AIGF) will already be or wish to be currently employed aboard vessels that are classified as 'gas-fueled vessels as defined by IGF Code. These vessels use LNG as a fuel source. LNG is stored at a temperature of approximately -160 degrees Celsius.

In order to qualify for entry into an AIGF course, each candidate must successfully complete the IGF, BASIC, course to receive their CoP certification to demonstrate their qualifications prior to enrolling in an AIGF course.

The following STCW Basic safety courses must be completed by each candidate prior to taking the AIGF Course:

  • Personal Survival Techniques

  • Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting

  • Elementary First Aid

  • Personal Safety & Social Responsibility

Furthermore, every candidate must hold a current DG Approved medical certificate provided to them by DG shipping approved doctors.

Generally, deck officer, engineer officer, electro-technical officer, or those persons who have been classified by a company as fit will meet the qualification criteria for joining an AIGF course.

What is the Document Required for AIGF Course?

The required Documentation for taking AIGF Course includes :

  •  Basic Safety (4 Certificates of STCW; Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting; Personal Survival Technique; Personal Safety and Social Responsibility; Elementary First Aid).

  • Copy of issued Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) of Basic IGF from Directorate General of Shipping, prior to embarkation.

  • Copy of INDOS Number (Indian Seafarer Identity Number).

  • 1 Copy of Passport (Bio Page).

  • 1 Copy of Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC).

  • A valid/approved Medical Fitness Certificate from a DG Shipping physician.

  • Current Passport Size Photo(s) (with/without Specimen Signature).
