Phase II of Becoming a Chief Mate is a DG Shipping approved competency course that may take 3 months to complete. The purpose of this course is to provide training for Second Mates who wish to advance into a Chief Officer (second-in-command) position on foreign going vessels. To be eligible for this course, you must hold a Second Mate (FG) Certificate of Competency and have provided proof of 18 months sea service and completion of Phase I course. The 270 hour course consists of advanced topics that will be useful at the management level in the areas of bridge watchkeeping, ship handling, navigational aids, engineering knowledge, naval architecture and maritime legislation. You will be qualified to take the MMD examinations after completion of the course and to receive your Chief Mate Certificate of Competency once you pass those examinations.

What is Eligibility for Chief Mate Phase-II?

To qualify for the Chief Mate Phase II (Mercantile Marine) Qualification the following are required for eligibility:

  1. A chief mate phase I certificate

  2. A second mate CoC issued by DG Shipping or equivalent authority.

  3. Approved sea service as a second officer as per IMO Guidance under STCW

  4. Valid STCW mandatory certificates including advanced fire fighting and medical care.

  5.  A valid CDC, passport & medical fitness certificate.

Documents Required for Chief Mate Phase-II

To apply for Chief Mate Phase II, you must carry following:

  1. Second Mate (FG) Certificate of Competency (CoC) (copy)

  2. Certificate of Completion from the Chief Mate Phase I course

  3. Verified sea service testimonials(s) or discharge certificates

  4. A valid CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate)

  5. A valid copy of your passport

  6. A current medical fitness certificate that conforms to Directorate General of Shipping guideline

  7. All required STCW convention Mandatory STCW course certificates

  8. One (1) recent passport-sized photo

  9. Completed course application form.
