The Chief Mate Phase II course is aimed at assisting deck officers in becoming Chief Mates on General Cargo Vessels. The Chief Mate Phase II course expands on the Chief Mate Phase I course and includes greater emphasis on the Practical Management of onboard operations including; Navigation, Cargo Operations, Ship Stability, Maritime Law and Leadership required to be a Chief Mate. Furthermore the course will provide a variety of subjects such as; Emergency Preparation, Bridge Team Management and Safety Procedures that meet IMO and STCW requirements. The Chief Mate Phase II Course format consists of a simulator training as well as either written or oral assessments. Upon completion of the Chief Mate Phase II course, an officer will be eligible to take the Chief Mate Competency Test (FG) administered by the appropriate Maritime Authority.

What is Eligibility for Chief Mate Phase-II?
To qualify for the Chief Mate Phase II (Mercantile Marine) Qualification the following are required for eligibility:
A chief mate phase I certificate
A second mate CoC issued by DG Shipping or equivalent authority.
Approved sea service as a second officer as per IMO Guidance under STCW
Valid STCW mandatory certificates including advanced fire fighting and medical care.
A valid CDC, passport & medical fitness certificate.
