The Chief Mate Phase-II course is the next level of Qualification training (essentially to become a Chief Mate) for deck officers who want to attain their Chief Mate Certificate of Competency in accordance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and STCW Convention). This course provides training in the areas of Advanced ship management, stability, cargo handling, Maritime law, meteorology, passage planning, and leadership. Successful completion of this course will prepare deck officers for the full responsibility of being the Second in Command of an Ocean-going vessel and will involve both classroom instruction, simulator scenarios and practical evaluations. Officers that successfully complete this course must take and pass the Chief Mate Competency exams given by the applicable Maritime Authority prior to being able to work as a Chief Mate.

What is Eligibility for Chief Mate Phase-II?

  • A current and valid Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency

  • Satisfactory completion of OOW sea service (according to the rules of your National Maritime Authority)

  • Hold a valid and approved STCW mandatory certificate issued by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). 

  • Valid medical fitness certificate.

  • Completed the necessary preparatory courses if applicable (e.g., Chief Mate (Phase I)).

  • Documents including passport, CDC, etc., must be valid.

  • You can speak English sufficiently for the purposes of navigation and ship operations.
