The High Voltage Operational Course is a short, STCW Aligned training course for marine engineers and electrical officers operating on ships equipped with electrical systems above 1000 volts. There will be a basic understanding of high voltage installations, safe operation procedures, system layout, protection devices, hazards and safety protocols to ensure the safe working of personnel in the vicinity of high voltage equipment onboard. Practical exercises will help develop the knowledge and skills required to deal with high voltage circuitry and switchgear appropriately, to meet the appropriate Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency requirements for an operational level competency under international maritime regulations. Upon completion of the course, trainees will receive an International recognised certificate for HV operational work at sea.

What is Eligibility for HV-O Course?


To qualify for the High Voltage Operational (HV Operational) Course for the Merchant Navy, candidates typically must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be an Electrical Engine or Engineer: Either Electro-Technical Officer (ETO), Marine Engineer or Engine Cadet.

  • Education Requirements: All Cadets must have completed their 10+2 in Science with Physics, Maths and Chemistry. Officers that are already serving may not need this education requirement.

  • Sea Experience Requirement: For Officers this is required for refresher and certification-type courses. For Cadets, Sea Experience is not always a requirement.

  • Health Requirements: You must meet the standard maritime medical requirements for an "Ability to Perform Shipboard Duties".

  • Age Requirements: You must be 18 years of age or older.
