MEO Class 1 Preparatory Course in Chennai
MEO Class 1 Preparatory Course is a compulsory 2-month training program approved by DGS for marine engineers who aspire to managerial positions. The key purpose of this program is to equip students with adequate skills to appear for CoC examinations to become a Chief Engineer on foreign ships.
As per STCW 95 Regulation II/2 and Section A-II/2 guidelines, this training offers all-round technical and managerial know-how for efficient and effective senior officer management. MEO Class 1 Preparatory Course Eligibility
Candidates wishing to enroll in the MEO Class 1 Preparatory Course must satisfy the following DG Shipping requirements:
For Motor or Steam Streams
Applicants must have completed 36 months of sea service as an Engineer Officer on Watch. This must include 12 months while holding an MEO Class 2 CoC. If a candidate has served 12 months as a Second Engineer Officer, the total required sea time is reduced to 24 months.
A minimum of two-thirds of the total sea service period must be documented as propelling time.
2. For Combined (Motor and Steam) Streams
A total of 40 months of sea service is required, with at least 20 months each in motor and steam vessels. This must include a minimum of 12 months as an MEO Class 2 Combined CoC holder. For those with 12 months of service as a Second Engineer, the requirement is reduced to 36 months total (18 months motor and 18 months steam).
Propelling time must account for at least two-thirds of the mandatory sea service duration.
