MEO Class 1 Preparatory Course in Kochi, Kerala
This preparatory course is a mandatory two months long course approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. The course aims at equipping the marine engineers with necessary skills, both technical and managerial, to perform well during the examination for MEO Class I Certificate of Competency (CoC) for the position of Chief Engineer on foreign-going ships.
In accordance with Regulation II/2 of STCW 95 convention, this course follows the guidelines stated in Section A-II/2. The course is conducted according to the IMO Model Course 7.01 and Section M-II/2A of the META Manual Vol.II.
After successfully completing this course, the validity period of MEO Class I CoC will be five years. In order to sail after the expiration of this validity period, marine engineers will have to complete the RUT course.
MEO Class - I Preparatory Course Eligibility
To enroll in the MEO Class I Preparatory Course, candidates must fulfill the following criteria:
For Motor/Steam
Candidates must have completed 36 months of service as an Engineer Officer on watch, which must include 12 months as a holder of an MEO Class II CoC. This total sea service requirement is reduced to 24 months if the candidate has served 12 months as a Second Engineer Officer.
The total propelling time during this period must constitute at least two-thirds of the total sea service.
2. For Combine (Motor and Steam)
A total of 40 months of sea service is required (20 months motor and 20 months steam), including at least 12 months with a Combined MEO Class II CoC. If the candidate has 12 months of service as a Second Engineer, the total requirement is reduced to 36 months (18 months each).
Propelling time must also be at least two-thirds of the respective sea service period.
