MEO Class 1 Preparatory Course is an intensive 2-month long program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). The primary objective of this course is to equip candidates with the necessary skills required to pass the MEO Class 1 competency examinations so that the candidate becomes competent enough to work as a Chief Engineer on foreign-going ships.

Following the guidelines mentioned under Regulation II/2 of STCW 95 convention, the course curriculum has been designed in reference to Section A-II/2. The study material of the course is prepared according to IMO Model Course 7.01 & Appendix M-II/2A in Volume II of META Manual. After completion, the certificate obtained from this course is valid for 5 years.

Eligibility for MEO Class 1 Preparatory Course

Candidates interested in the MEO Class 1 Preparatory Course must fulfill the specific maritime service requirements listed below:

1. For Motor/Steam Categories

• Applicants must document 36 months of sea service as an Engineer Officer on Watch, including at least 12 months while holding an MEO Class II CoC. This 36-month requirement can be reduced to 24 months if the candidate has served 12 months as a Second Engineer.

• At least two-thirds of the documented sea service must be spent on propelling time.

2. For Combined (Motor and Steam) Category

• Candidates require 40 months of total service (20 months Motor + 20 months Steam), including 12 months as a holder of a combined MEO Class II CoC. If 12 months were served as a Second Engineer, the requirement is reduced to 36 months.

• The propelling time must comprise at least two-thirds of the total sea service period.

• A valid INDoS Identifier.

• A valid Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) with proof of required sea service.

• A valid MEO Class II Certificate of Competency (CoC).
